Is NCSBN planning a from-home NCLEX?

Yes. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has confirmed that it is developing a remote or online NCLEX testing option. This would allow eligible candidates to take the NCLEX from home or another approved private location, using live remote proctoring and advanced exam security measures.

This initiative is often referred to informally as “NCLEX Online.” While still under development, it represents a major shift in how licensure exams may be delivered in the future.

When will NCLEX from-home start?

The NCSBN has indicated plans to launch the from-home NCLEX option in 2026. However, no official start date has been announced yet.

The rollout is expected sometime in 2026, once the NCSBN and its testing partners finalize:

  • Exam security protocols
  • Technology infrastructure
  • Proctoring systems
  • Regulatory approvals across jurisdictions

Until this official launch occurs, all candidates are still required to take the NCLEX at authorized testing centers operated by Pearson VUE.

Important points about the upcoming online NCLEX

Here are the key facts candidates should clearly understand:

  • It will be optional
Candidates will still be able to choose a traditional Pearson VUE test center if they prefer in-person testing.
  • No changes to exam standards
The exam content, NGN format, scoring system, and pass/fail decision will remain exactly the same, whether taken at home or at a test center.
  • Strict technical and security requirements
    Remote test-takers will need:
    • A computer that meets system specifications
    • A webcam and microphone
    • A phone or secondary device for a 360-degree room scan
    • A stable, high-speed internet connection
    • A quiet, private testing environment

These measures are designed to preserve the integrity and credibility of the NCLEX.
